Valve has cut spending on Dota 2 tournaments for 4 years

Esports analyst Ben "Noxville" Steenhuisen has posted two charts. One of them shows how much money Valve has spent on the competitive Dota 2 scene over the past 10 years, while the other one shows Valve's revenue from The International.

The statistics don't reflect the part of The International prize pool accumulated through the sale of the Battle Pass, only the initial prize pool invested by Valve. Most of the money was spent maintaining the competitive Dota 2 scene in 2015-2016: almost $10 million was spent on the prize of the majors, and the same amount — on their organization. In the next season, expenses were reduced by more than 30%, and in the current competitive season, Valve invested less than $ 5 million.

The second graph shows how Valve's revenue from a Battle Pass has increased. It is known that 75% of the money remains with the company and 25% goes to the prize pool of The International. In 2014-2015, the company's earnings amounted to $26 million, and this year - over $116 million.

It is still unknown how Valve will support the competitive Dota 2 scene in the coming year. At the moment, we only know that the DPC season should start on December 18.
